Coven Berlin presents ’I’d rather be a goddess than a cyborg’, a feminist queer art festival. It will feature the works of artists from various disciplines with a common focus on feminism and technology. Screenings, workshops, performances, talks and much more will take place from the 8th till the 22nd of May at Kleiner Salon. Read our suggestions for this amazing festival in this article!
Of course there will be a grand opening on Friday the 8th, with several performances from 7 till 11pm, but all fourteen days of the festival are fully packed with interesting and exceptional events! Here I will give you some suggestions.
On Saturday the 9th of May the festival will kick off and you can join a workshop by Luiza Prado called ’Unboxing contraception: pills and the politics of gender’. The session investigates pharmacological contraception pill and it’s intense connection to how woman perceive, create and perform gender. It proposes a discussion on how this might be in the future.
On Tuesday the 12th of May, artist Louise Trueheart will carry out a one-on-one performance on Skype called ’UAV SOP BTW DTF’! It confronts two extreme screen situations: webcam girls and drone warfare. These different on-screen experiences give the audience perspective on intimacy and how we look for it, politics and how we participate in it, objects and their power, and ethics.
On Tuesday the 19th of May, the screening of the cyberpunk film I.K.U directed by Shu Lea Cheang will take place! It’s a 2001 independent film marketed as ’a Japanese Sci-Fi Porn Feature’ inspired by the Blade Runner (1982) and set in the year 2030. I.K.U. premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2000, which was the first time a pornographic film was selected for competition in the festival!
If you couldn’t get enough, join them for the closing party on the 22nd of May at the former brothel Loophole. With an all-female line up and a queer interactive performance, this event will be the cherry on top of the event series!
